Without Buddha I Could Not be a Christian with Paul Knitter

Without Buddha, I could Not be a Christian narrates how esteemed theologian, Paul F. Knitter overcame a crisis of faith by looking to Buddhism for inspiration. From prayer to how Christianity views life after death, Knitter argues that a Buddhist standpoint can encourage a more person-centered conception of Christianity, where individual religious experience comes first, and liturgy and tradition second. Moving and revolutionary, this book will inspire Christians everywhere.

Virtual Silent Saturday - The End of All That is Not Christ in Us - ZOOM

Facilitated by Sr. Carol Ann Spencer

Contemplative Outreach of Columbus is offering a Silent Saturday. A Silent Saturday provides a few hours that are set aside for Centering Prayer, Lectio Divina, spiritual teaching and reflection. “Come rest awhile with the Lord” in preparation for Advent.

Advent is a time of beginning. We are invited to renew our journey by pondering Thomas Merton’s statement: “The Advent Mystery is the Beginning of the End of All in us that is not Christ.” In Jesus we are told God and humanity are meant for each other. We are called to be fully human as Jesus was fully human.

Register by sending an email to Bob Gorman at rbrtgorman@gmail.com and a zoom link and handouts will be sent to you a few days in advance.

The event is free. Nondeductible donations to Contemplative Outreach of Columbus to cover costs are welcome. They can be sent to the care of Tom Davis at 844 Franklin Ave Columbus OH 43205.

Sr. Carol Ann Spencer O.P. is a member of the Dominican Sisters of Peace. She has led countless workshops and retreats. She is also the founding director of WELLSTREAMS, a program for becoming a spiritual director through the Spirituality Network.

The Joy of Waiting: An Advent Day for Silence, Respite and Reflection - Zoom

Led by Carl McColman

Advent is a holy season of silence, waiting and preparation, but for so many of us, it is also a busy time filled with parties, concerts and hard work preparing for the festivities of Christmas.

You are invited to join a circle of friends on Zoom for this online retreat dedicated to the qualities that make Advent special and can help us to navigate the many activities of the season.

We will draw on a variety of sources, including Celtic spirituality, the Psalms, and the wisdom of several great mystics. Our time together will include meditations, silence, prayer, and journaling, plus optional opportunities for shared discussion and reflection.

Cost: $30. Scholarships available.

A concert to support women’s cottage industries in Guinea, West Africa

North Congregational UCC has partnered with Mamady Mansare, African Cultural Arts Institute, to present a fundraising concert in support of the women’s cottage industries in Guinea, West Africa. Villagers in Mamady’s home village of Coyah, have fed their families for generations by farming, but farming does not provide enough money to meet their needs for medical care, education, and housing expenses. The recent flooding in their community has made a challenging situation even more difficult.

The women are skilled tailors and jewelry makers but lack the funds to purchase supplies and equipment to produce enough items for profitable marketing. This fundraiser is designed to generate seed money for cloth, beads, and other supplies. Once they create sufficient inventory, Mamady, through his company, The African Cultural Arts Institute, will assist these artisans by marketing their crafts here in the U.S.

The concert will be presented by Mamady and his Columbus-based students, which includes Joyce Phelps. This will be an evening of West African cultural enrichment through traditional drumming, dance, song, and storytelling. Before the program ends, members of local drum circles will join Mamady and his students in one of the traditional rhythms from Guinea.

Concert Details:
- Doors will open at 6 pm for a silent auction (djembe drum, traditional African mask, cloth from Guinea, drum lessons with Mamady)
- Tickets - $20; children ages 12 and under - free

We hope you will join us for an evening of spirited music in support of our Guinean sisters!

Phases: A Found Poetry Journey

Facilitated by Christine Hiester.

Book pages, a pair of scissors, and an open heart. That’s all it takes.

Found poetry is one of those creative practices that seems almost magical, or at the very least mysterious. It’s simple, accessible, and requires very few materials, but uniquely taps into our deeper self, our subconscious, our soul with words that are not ours but become ours simply by listening.

When is the last time you listened like that?
